On May 2, 2022, a wildfire started near Nogal Canyon and Pennsylvania Canyon 12 miles west of Capitan, New Mexico. The fire consumed over 400 acres of land and damaged 6 primary residences and 8 outbuildings before it was contained. Investigation has determined that the fire was caused by downed power lines. Investigation is ongoing regarding the potential liability of the local utility company.
