The McKinley Fire started near milepost 91 of the Parks Highway 18 miles north of Willow, Alaska on August 17, 2019. The fire burned 52 primary residences, three commercial structures, and 84 outbuildings on the night of August 18, 2019. The fire was contained at 3,288 acres. Alaska wildfire officials are reviewing their initial assessment of the cause of the McKinley fire, which began in high wind and was initially attributed to a tree toppling onto a power line. Investigation is underway to determine if there is any potential for subrogation recovery.
