On April 6, 2022, the Hermit’s Peak wildfire started 12 miles northwest of Las Vegas, New Mexico. On April 19, 2022, the Calf Canyon wildfire started 18 miles northwest of Las Vegas, New Mexico. The two fires merged and consumed 340,980 acres of land before the combined fire was contained. The USFS has publicly acknowledged that the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon fire was caused by USFS controlled burns that escaped. Stutman is compiling documentation from clients for submittal of a claim to the USFS.
