Utopia quarter-turn shutoff valves have been used in plumbing systems as three-way bypass valves. Utopia is a brand of LaSalle Bristol, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Patrick Industries. The valves may be identified by the Utopia name or logo on the valve handle.
Clayton Homes, a builder of manufactured homes, modular homes, CrossMod homes and site-built homes reportedly utilized the Utopia valve as the main cold water shutoff valve in certain manufactured homes. The Utopia valve was installed in 2019–2023 model homes.
Reported Cause of Failure
The reported failure occurs when the bottom of the valve fractures at the valve’s internal waterway. This fracture can cause separation of the valve body, resulting in an uncontrollable flow of water that cannot be shut off at the failed valve. Because the Utopia valve was used as the main cold water shutoff valve in certain homes, this failure can lead to significant water discharge.
Testing has determined that the valve is constructed of acetal. Acetal components are particularly susceptible to chloride degradation. When acetal is used in a water application, chlorides in the water supply can cause the material to discolor and degrade. As the material degrades, the valve becomes weaker until it ultimately fractures.
Given acetal’s known susceptibility to chloride degradation, the reported cause of failure has been classified as a manufacturer’s defect. Specifically, the issue appears to involve the failure to properly formulate the valve material to resist environmental conditions reasonably encountered during the intended use of the product.
Recall Information
Clayton Homes has issued a recall of defective Utopia master cold-water full-flow shutoff valves. The recall notice states that Clayton Homes determined that a defect may exist in certain homes and that a faulty master cold-water full-flow shutoff valve may have been installed. The notice further states that the potential failure of the valve may cause it to leak and prevent the water from being shut off.
Evidence to Preserve
Claims involving Utopia shutoff valve failures should be investigated promptly. Important evidence may include the failed valve, connected plumbing components, installation records, model year information, recall documents, and photographs of the loss scene.
Preserving the failed valve is especially important. The condition of the valve, including any fracture, separation, discoloration, degradation, or markings, may be critical to evaluating the cause of failure and potential recovery.
